Bao

During the two-week celebration of the Lunar New Year, which is celebrated from the first new moon of the lunar calendar (this year, that took place on the evening of February 16-17, 2026) until the first full moon of the lunar calendar (which will be 15 days later). On that day, the Lantern Festival will take place to mark the end of the Lunar New Year celebrations.

During the celebration of the Lunar New Year, it is customary to offer guests some food or drink when they arrive. This year, we at Savour Guyana have prepared some special treats. We made some Bao – Chinese buns made of soft, fluffy dough and filled with a mixture of pork, mushrooms and vegetables.

As the kitchen filled with the aromas of the filling cooking and as the dough took shape, a flood of memories from early childhood came back. Nothing beats a fresh fluffy bao (which I grew up calling ‘pow’)! Honestly, it’s the ultimate comfort food for the soul.
